Medicine Education: What Children Need
to Know
Today, most of the information that children receive about drugs
is negative. Young children are confused and older children begin
to associate the word "drug" only with illegal substances
that are addictive and harmful. Howver, children must be taught
that medicines are also drugs and, when properly used, can be
helpful. Conversely, they must be taught that even drugs meant
for medicinal purposes can be harmful if used improperly.
To assist with the dissemination of this informtion, NCHE has
developed informatin for parents, teachers, and caregivers that
encompasses a variety of topics including, facts about immunizations,
questions to ask the doctor, as well as how to read a prescription
label. Additionally, NCHE has developed medicine education lessons
for Kindergarten-Eighth Grade classrooms. The lessons include
topics such as the definiton of medicine, the role of a pharmacist,
dietary supplements, and the use of pictograms or graphics on
medicine labels. The lessons are age appropriate, utilize a variety
of instructional strategies, and are interdisciplinary.
All information for NHEW 2002 is available for download and we
encourage you to make additional copies as needed.
