Healthy Eating : Every Bite Counts!
Overweight and physical inactivity account for more than 300,000
premature deaths a year in the United States. National efforts
to encourage physical activity and better nutrition are needed.
The growing prevalence of obesity in the United States represents
a significant health threat to millions of Americans. According
to the CDC, the obesity epidemic spread during the 1990's across
all states, regions and demographic groups of the United States.
Obesity has increased in startling numbers. The percentage of
children who are overweight continues to rise. Among children
ages 6-19, 15%, almost 9 million are overweight. This is triple
the amount in the 1980's. In addition over 10% of preschool children
ages 2-5 are overweight.
This obesity epidemic had created profound health implications
in the United States. Dr. Julie Gerberding, CDC director, says
that "one of the most significant concerns from a public
health perspective is that we know a lot of children who are overweight
grow to overweight or obese adults, and thus creates a greater
risk for some major health problems..." Obesity is a national
health concern resulting in the risk of chronic diseases such
as: hypertension, cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes and
some types of cancer.
One solution to this rising epidemic is to work together to help
children make healthy eating a life long habit. Building upon
last year's campaign to promote physical activity, the National
Center for Health Education (NCHE) and the Society for Public
Health Educators (SOPHE) have
announced that the theme for National Health Education Week (NHEW)
2004 is Healthy Eating: Every Bite Counts!
We are inviting interested individuals, communities, and organizations
to promote and participate in a national initiative to help people
develop healthy eating habits for life. You can find fun and simple
ideas to get your community involved in celebrating this week
by visiting the NCHE and SOPHE websites. NCHE and SOPHE have developed
a variety of materials for schools, parents, public health professionals,
and organizations to promote healthy eating nationwide. Materials
include school-based health education lessons; parent, teacher
and practitioner resources; tools for planning a community campaign;
templates for gubernatorial proclamations and sample press releases.
Click on the links below to access the materials free of charge.
To highlight local National Health Education Week celebrations,
NCHE and SOPHE are also sponsoring a contest featuring successful
community efforts. Please click on the contest link below to fill
out a NHEW contest application.
Materials are also available in hard copy form for a minimal
cost. If you would like to receive a hard copy or have any questions,
please contact Jeanne Chun, Associate Program Director, at 212-463-4057
or jeanne@nche.org.
