Audrey Gotsch, Dr.P.H, Chair, is professor and dean of
the School of Public Health at the University of Medicine and
Dentistry of New Jersey. She has been involved in the design,
implementation, evaluation and replication of an environmental
and occupational health information program that includes an environmental
health science curriculum for youth. Dr. Gotsch is a past president
of the American Public Health Association and has been a member
of the executive board of the New Jersey Public Health Association
where she has served on the legislative and program committees.
She holds a B.S. from Indiana University, M.P.H. from the University
of Michigan, and Dr.P.H. from Columbia University.
Tom Lom, M.B.A., Vice Chair, is a managing director of
Saatchi & Saatchi Healthcare, where he has been responsible
for expanding the Saatchi & Saatchi health portfolio and managing
the agency's international partnership with Johnson & Johnson
in over-the-counter medicines. He managed the Tylenol account,
the number-one consumer health brand in America, and led the effort
to help Tylenol recover consumer confidence after criminal tampering
incidents. He was also president and CEO of William Douglas McAdams,
a leading health care agency focusing on prescription drugs where
he pioneered several direct-to-consumer adverting programs for
GlaxoWellcome, Hoffman LaRoche, and Schering-Plough. He holds
a B.A. degree from Trinity College and M.B.A. from Columbia University.
Michael Ryan, Esq., Secretary, is a partner with the New
York office of Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, one of the world's
most prominent law firms. Co-Chairman of the Cadwalader's Corporate
Department, Mr. Ryan is experienced in all aspects of complex
corporate transactions. He has had significant experience in structuring
and implementing corporate reorganizations out of bankruptcy,
including debt restructurings, and in the privatization of NYSE-listed
companies. He oversees the regulatory reporting compliance for
several public companies and counsels clients on a broad range
of business and commercial matters. A graduate of Boston College,
he received his law degree from the Harvard Law School.
Fred Schnur, C.P.A., Treasurer, is vice president for
finance and administration at Teachers College, Columbia University.
Prior to coming to Teachers College, Mr. Schnur was vice president
for finance and administration at the University of New Hampshire
and, previously, at the University of Maryland at Baltimore. Mr.
Schnur is the treasurer of the Morningside Heights Alliance, a
coalition of the major institutions in the Morningside Heights
community of Manhattan, which works to improve and increase housing
in the neighborhood, beautify streets and parks, ensure the safety
of residents, and provide educational and recreational opportunities
for youth. A Certified Public Accountant, Mr. Schnur is a graduate
of the City College of New York and has done graduate work at
Baruch College.
John Allegrante, Ph.D., President and CEO, is professor
of health education at Teachers College, Columbia University,
and adjunct professor of public health at the Mailman School of
Public Health. In addition, he is an adjunct professor of behavioral
science in medicine at the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical College
of Cornell University and a senior scientist at the Hospital for
Special Surgery. Dr. Allegrante is a past president and Distinguished
Fellow of the Society for Public Health Education, a former W.
K. Kellogg Foundation Fellow, and was a Pew Health Policy Fellow
at the RAND/UCLA Center for Health Policy Study. He completed
his undergraduate degree at the State University of New York at
Cortland and holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University
of Illinois.
Frank Barker is retired corporate vice president and company
group chairman of Johnson & Johnson, the world's most diversified
health care company. During his career with the company he held
several managerial positions, including national sales manager,
vice president and general manager of the health care division,
and corporate vice president for public affairs. As company group
chairman, he had responsibility for consumer, pharmaceutical,
and professional franchises in Asia, Southern Africa, Australia,
and New Zealand. He currently serves as chairman of U.S. Dermatologics,
Inc. He is a graduate and distinguished alumnus of Rollins College,
of which he is also a trustee.
J. Edward Hill, M.D., a family physician from Tupelo,
Mississippi, is an elected member of the American Medical Association
(AMA) Board of Trustees and is currently chairman of the AMA Board.
He was appointed by the Board of Trustees to the AMA's Council
on Legislation in 1990, serving as its vice chair from 1995 to
1996. In addition, Dr. Hill has served as chairman of the Board
of Trustees and president of the Mississippi State Medical Association,
president of the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians, a delegate
to the American Academy of Family Physicians, and president of
the Southern Medical Association. He currently sits on the Board
of Trustees of the National Health Museum. He received his B.S.
and M.D. degrees from the University of Mississippi.
Owen Rankin is the executive director of Corporate Contributions
at Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products Company. He has had
management responsibility for the Johnson & Johnson Pediatric
Institute, the BabyCenter/ParentCenter Business and the U.S. Consumer
Information Center. He joined Johnson & Johnson in 1997 as
vice president of Worldwide Baby Franchise. Prior to joining Johnson
& Johnson, Mr. Rankin spent 11 years at Tambrands, Inc., in
marketing and management roles in the U.S. and United Kingdom.
His last assignment there was as vice president of global marketing.
Mr. Rankin started his career in advertising, spending four years
with two New York-based advertising agencies. He is a graduate
of the University of Virginia.
Maxine Thomas is secretary and general counsel for the
Kettering Foundation. As a program officer, she directs projects
in higher education, community leadership, and the relationship
between citizens and officeholders. She has been a member of the
Kettering Foundation task force on China since 1993. Before coming
to the Kettering Foundation, Ms. Thomas was associate dean of
the University of Georgia School of Law where she also served
as an assistant and associate professor. She was previously on
the faculty of the University of Oregon School of Law. A former
W. K. Kellogg Foundation Fellow, Ms. Thomas was assistant attorney
general for the state of Washington from 1973 to 1976. She holds
baccalaureate and law degrees from the University of Washington.
